Sensational Saturday: Taste of Belgian Waffles
We love the taste of authentic Belgian waffles! They are a highlight of our travels in Europe. The search for the perfect recipe to recreate these wonderful treats has been difficult. This recipe has been the closest that we’ve discovered.
3 cups of water at room temperature
12 TB melted and cooled butter
1 1/2 ts salt
2 ts vanilla extract
4 cp flour (unbleached, all-purpose)
1 TB yeast
1 cp pearl sugar
Combine all ingredients except for the pearl sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat until your batter is smooth. Cover and allow the batter to rest for an hour on the counter. Then place the covered bowl in the refrigerator for about 8 hours (overnight is good). Note: Be sure that your bowl is large enough for the expanding batter. When you are ready to cook the waffles, stir the pearl sugar into the batter. Heat your waffle iron, spray with cooking oil, pour 1 1/2 cp batter into the center of your iron and cook per your waffle iron’s instructions.
Best eaten warm. You can enjoy them with a variety of toppings: powdered sugar, fruit, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, nutella, whipped cream, jam or jelly, peanut butter, etc.
