Where Do You Want to Be Photographed?

The point of a portrait, individual or group, is that it portrays something of the individuals being photographed, something unique at this moment in time.  It should be a personal image; it should show that this person or family or group is unique.  Lifestyle photography is a popular form of portrait photography currently.  It attempts to capture the essence of the individuals being photographed through the activities and places that are a part of their everyday lives and/or are important to them.

Studio portraits certainly have their value and some advantages over lifestyle portraits: temperature and weather control, lighting control, availability of ample props without having to tote them, convenient bathrooms and other comforts, convenience in general, and again control over most aspects of the shoot.  But sometimes, going on location can better capture what you are after.  Getting out of the studio is an adventure.  Even with planning, you still have to think on your feet, be flexible, and expect the unexpected.

Think about the places that define you, that showcase some of your positive traits.  It might be your home, but then you have to think about what room or corner best suits you.  Maybe you frequent a garden or some other place of refuge and inspiration.  Where do you hang out – the zoo, your yard, the beach, the patio, the pub down the street?  What activities fill your time?  There’s the obvious one that often takes up most of our time – The Job.  You can be photographed at work if you love your job.  Other, usually more fun, options may include drinking coffee, walking in the woods, working on your car, shopping, enjoying your boat, showing off your motorcycle, riding your mountain bike, cheering for your favorite team, playing your favorite sport, whatever it is that says This-is-me.

Think about the places and activities that show who you are, the things about you that make you unique and special.  Share these ideas with your photographer, and if they get exited about your ideas, you have found the right person to do your photo shoot.  Take your personal qualities and quirks and turn them into photos.

So, where do YOU want to be photographed?
