We’ve been told to think outside the box for so long now that we forgot that the box can be a good thing too. Do you notice that you find yourself drawn to a specific orientation, like landscape or portrait (horizontal or vertical), in your photography? Most people have a preference when shooting. Of course there are guidelines about when to use each, but that’s not what I want to talk about. For a change of pace, or for compromise, try framing and cropping your subject or scene for a finished image that is square. There is something inherently pleasing about a square photo. Its even-ness and symmetry express a sense of balance.
Play with a variety of perspectives when taking photographs. Take the same picture from a variety of angles and with differing frameworks in mind. Be creative with your thinking. See what you can see inside your box!
